Beatrice Hastings

(1879-1943)

Shaped modernist writing and radical politics. Then history focused on her lovers.

Beatrice Hastings was a literary force - sharp-tongued, intellectually fearless, and impossible to ignore. A poet, essayist, critic, and editor, she helped shape modernist culture from the inside.


Between 1907 and 1920, she published hundreds of essays in The New Age, one of Britain’s most influential intellectual journals. She argued publicly with Ezra Pound about nationalism and art. She challenged the Futurists’ celebration of machinery and violence. She pushed socialist thinkers to confront women’s economic independence instead of postponing it. These weren’t side notes - they were live debates that helped determine how modern art and politics would move forward.


Hastings wrote fast and without apology. She dissected marriage law, wage inequality, and literary power structures with clarity and force. She dismissed sentimental feminism and broke with male-led radical movements when they sidelined women. For her, equality meant ownership, income, authority - not admiration.


She stood among the figures later credited with defining modernism - Pound, Lewis, Mansfield — as a rival mind shaping the argument. But intellectual history is built and preserved through male networks. Hastings did not belong to them. She challenged authority and refused alignment. The men she debated - and loved - were elevated into literary history. Their reputations were protected, expanded, institutionalized. Her role was filtered through their biographies, reduced to anecdote, and rewritten in their shadow.


You can shrink a woman’s name in the archive. It’s harder to shrink the impact of her voice.


Hastings argued in public and did not soften her voice to stay there. She treated leading intellectuals as equals and held them to account, establishing a precedent.
